As the sun starts to make an appearance and pollen levels rise, the estimated 16 million people who suffer from hay fever across Britain will be gearing themselves up for a Summer of sneezing. So, you are probably wondering, can mushrooms really help hay fever?
Well, the short answer is… Yes!
Here’s how…
The ‘Mushroom of Immortality’
Known in China as the King of all Mushrooms, the Reishi (Ling Zhi) mushroom is a medicinal mushroom that has been cultivated for thousands of years in the Far East for its array of health benefits. It is an edible type of medicinal fungus that fits the definition of a true superfood. These mushrooms are anti-inflammatory and tied to longevity, better immune function and mental clarity, worthy of the nickname ‘Mushroom of Immortality’.
Reishi mushroom is also known as the ‘number one natural supplement for suppressing hay fever’, due to its ability to relieve hay fever and allergy symptoms. The mushroom contains bioflavonoid triterpene, this inhibits histamine release and oleic acid which has antihistamine properties. Combining this with its powerful effects to regulate the immune system and improve oxygen supply, this is a fantastic natural solution for those suffering from the sneezes.
Reishi Remedies
If you are suffering from hay fever, it is important to incorporate Reishi into your lifestyle. We have a couple of solutions which may be beneficial to suppress the effects of hay fever:
The 450mg capsules are perfect for those who do not like the taste of raw herbs and want a quick, convenient solution.
What makes these mushrooms special is that unlike other mushroom products, Mycology Nutrition uses the whole food, rather than an extract to ensure better digestibility. All products contain both mycelium and a fruiting body to ensure there is no loss of valuable enzymes, co-enzymes and important co-factors.
Each bottle contains 90 organic, gluten-free capsules which can be consumed easily. For your correct dosage, please refer to the packaging label for directions*.
*Please note the mushroom capsules cannot be mixed with acidic drinks such as organic juice or carbonated drinks.
The 120gram whole food powder can be added to tea, cereal, soups, shakes and more! It’s an easy and effective way to get all the health benefits of the Reishi mushroom.
The organic mushrooms are high in fibre, vitamins and minerals, specifically Vitamin D2 which helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus. Just like the whole Mycology range, the Reishi mushroom is simply grown, milled into a powder, resulting in a pure product ready to be consumed.
The Verdict

These can all contribute to mental health problems, including depression and anxiety.
Feeling down now and then is normal, with some people experiencing anxiousness at one time or another in response to stressful situations. There are many people who experience ongoing severe feelings of depression and anxiety which can be a sign of an underlying mental health condition. Zhi Zi Shan is native to China, Japan, and Taiwan, but is also found in warm climates around the world today. It is prized for its array of health benefits.
Health benefits of this medicinal herb may assist depression and anxiety by helping to lower blood pressure and help stop nausea and vomiting. Dried Cape Jasmine Fruit has also been prized for its ability to aid restlessness and fight a moderate cold. The fruit itself can be consumed as a food, or can be used in a herbal tea. Some people have used Dried Cape Jasmine Fruit in a variety of culinary recipes, including Gardenia milkshake, chocolate mousse and litchi fruit salad (recipes coming soon)!
Dried Turmeric Rhizome is the dried underground stem of the turmeric plant, also known as Curcuma longa. The root is ground up into the distinctive yellow turmeric powder. Some studies have proven that turmeric has more advantages than certain prescription drugs.

Mental Health in the UK
Research has found that the past 18 months of lockdown has had a major impact on the UK’s mental health, including increased rates of suicidal thoughts. The study found suicidal thoughts increased from 8% to 10% and they were highest among young adults aged 18 – 29, rising from 12.5% to 14%. This data suggests that the huge social and economic uncertainty associated with the ongoing pandemic may be causing some people to feel negative emotions.
According to the study, young people, women and individuals from more socially disadvantaged backgrounds and those with pre-existing mental health problems reported the worse mental health outcomes in the initial phase of the national lockdown. However, there are small changes individuals can make to potentially improve their mental health, including diet changes.
Healing Hericium (Lion’s Mane)
Mushrooms come in lots of different shapes, sizes and colours. They are fat-free, low-sodium, low-calorie and cholesterol-free. They are also packed with fibre, vitamins and minerals. Mushroom nutrition is backed by several studies that support their ability to improve the immune function, reduce inflammation, protect against cancer and more.
While all medicinal mushrooms share similar compounds, Hericium (Lion’s Mane) mushroom may be particularly effective at boosting mental health and positivity.
How can Hericium help?
Hericium mushroom is a large, white fungus with a long, shaggy spine which resembles a lion’s mane. Also known as Hericium Erinaceus or the Hedgehog mushroom, Hericium grows on hardwood trees across North America, Asia and Europe. The Hericium mushroom has been traditionally used to support brain health.
The Hericium mushroom is favoured for its ability to improve the development and function of the nerves, which may help to prevent conditions such as memory loss. It is the bioactive substances in the mushroom that have beneficial effects on the body, particularly the brain.
Hericium may support cognitive health and memory, while protecting against cognitive decline by promoting the production of the nerve growth factor. This is a chemical that is critical in the development and survival of neurons, while regulating cells in the nervous system. It is the anti-inflammatory effects found in Hericium that may help to ease anxiety, reduce depression and improve sleep quality.
Many describe the taste of Hericium mushroom as “seafood-like”, often comparing it to crab or lobster, therefore one of the easiest ways to incorporate Hericium into your lifestyle is in capsule or powder form.
The 450mg capsules are perfect for those who prefer an easy, convenient solution to receive the health benefits of the Hericium mushroom.

We understand that consuming the berries can become a bit boring, so we’ve compiled a list of our favourite ways to use them to spice things up!
TEA
Goji berries can be used to brew a tea. Try adding a handful of goji berries to a big glass of hot or cold water and let it sit and hydrate for 5 to 10 minutes. The berries will become plump and juicy. Once you have drunk the tea, why not eat the hydrated berries? They’ll be loaded with antioxidants!

Why not try adding goji berries to muffins or scones? They make a great substitute or accompaniment to raisins. Why not try adding blueberries too?
Goji Berry Scones:
Mix together 200g flour and 1tbsp baking powder, then rub in 50g cubes of butter.
Add 40g sugar, 30g goji berries and a handful of sultanas if you are using them.

Knead the dough and roll out onto a floured surface.
Using a cutter, cut out the scones and place on a greased baking tray.
Bake for about 10 minutes, or until risen and golden.
ENERGY BARS
Goji berries also make great energy bars. They’re a healthier change to shop-brought snacks and have an added bonus of being good for you!
Blend a handful of goji berries together with a cup of walnuts 1/2 cup of almonds and 5-6 jujube dates in a food processor.
Roll the mix into balls or spread in a deep pan to make bars.
Refrigerate for 2 hours and then enjoy!

Stir in fresh coriander and blend the soup until smooth.
POPCORN
This one is one of our favourites! Goji berry popcorn is perfect for a snack in front of the TV, whilst sitting on the train or eating at your desk at work. It’s tasty and super quick and easy to make!
Melt 1 tbsp coconut oil in a sauce on a medium-high heat. Once melted, stir in 2tbsp cocoa powder, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp vanilla powder, handful of salt and a dash of maple syrup until combined.
Add popping corn to the saucepan and shake until fully coated in the mixture. Place a lid on the sauce but leave a hole to let from the popcorn out.
